Siteground vs Hostgator

Choosing the right hosting provider is the most important thing for the success of your site and can be a difficult task, given the number of options to consider.

Siteground and Hostgator are two major leaders and competitors in the web hosting industry. They are recommended on the wordpress.org site for quite good reasons. In addition to popularity, they continue to improve and introduce new features for the needs of their users.

To compare them, I decided to present to you all the characteristics that I consider important when choosing hosting, and which make a hosting company great. I will show you who offers the best value, performance and support for your WordPress site and blog.

Siteground was founded in 2004 and now hosts over 1.8 million sites worldwide, with 500 employees. Judging by the positive experiences, it is one of the most desirable hosting companies on the Internet, because it offers the best hosting services (below you will see why).

It is a rare private company whose headquarters are outside the USA – in Sofia (Bulgaria) headed by the amazing Tank Nikolov (if you listen to his podcast, you will understand why I love this company!).

Siteground offers various hosting packages and boasts a customer satisfaction rate of 97% in 2017, which is really huge.

Hostagtor is also a planetarily popular hosting company.

As for their popularity, according to Google Trends, Hostgator is more popular than Siteground. Also, if you read popular blogs or research how to create a blog on Google, you will see a lot of ads and recommendations for Hostgator.

Perhaps this popularity should not be taken for granted, because most large companies, at the expense of a large number of users, often reduce the efficiency and quality of support. In addition, Hostgator invests heavily in marketing and you will receive the highest commission from them as their affiliate partner.

There are a lot of surveys on Facebook about hosting providers, which were created in groups for WordPress hosting of several thousand members. Most have Siteground, number one, as recommended hosting.

Siteground is the best choice if you are looking for great support and exceptional performance from your hosting provider. Hostingator is a solution for sites with a higher load, and at lower prices.

Siteground vs. Hostingator – How Suitable Are They For Beginners?

When you first create a site and are new to web hosting, it is certainly important for you to know how much these hosting services help beginners. Here is information on refunds, site migration, domain registration, cPanel, site development tools.
Money back guarantee

A money back guarantee is a promise from a company that they will refund your money within a certain period of time if you are not satisfied with their product. This shows you how much the company believes in its product and service and is important, but it is not a top priority when choosing hosting.

The refund guarantee with Siteground is 30 days for all hosting plans. Money related to the payment of domains and other additional functions is not included in the refund. You can refund the amount to your account or directly to your card.

The Hostator also offers a 30-day warranty, which applies only to the hosting plan and does not apply to additional services. You will only receive a full refund if you cancel within 30 days. Otherwise, it will reduce your overdue amount.
Site migration

Site migration can be a problem for you, especially if you are doing it for the first time. Siteground experts will move your site and cPanel from another hosting for free, with the GrowBig and GoGeek packages. After my request in the Transfer Site section, they moved my site to their hosting in less than a day.

With the StartUp package, you can request migration from their team and pay $ 30 for it. You can also migrate an existing site to Siteground yourself (without technical knowledge), by installing the WordPress Migrator plugin, by following the detailed instructions on their site.

To migrate a site to Hostingator you have two options: the first is to manually transfer your site or to pay this service around $ 150 to their team. For this price it will move you up to 5 sites and 20 email accounts.
Creating domains, subdomains, parked domains

On Siteground, you can transfer a domain you already have or buy a domain (which will cost you about 14 euros a year). You can also create as many subdomains and parked domains as you need within all packages.

At Hostingator you get a free domain when you buy any package. When adding subdomains and parked domains, there are restrictions on 5 and 25 for the initial package, while for larger packages there are no restrictions.
User interface

For anyone new to hosting, it is important to be familiar with two aspects of the user interface when it comes to a hosting account.

The first control panel you encounter gives an overview of all the services you use, and the second is the cPanel (control panel) which is used to manage the various functions of your site.

cPanel is the more important part, because it requires investing more time and activity. Both Siteground and Hostingator offer their users a unique cPanel with many common features (FTP account, email account, file management, PHPMyAdmin, with the ability to enable CloudFlare (CDN option) with both providers).

For anyone using cPanel for the first time, Hostingator offers a simplified version. At Hostingator, they constantly offer you certain additional (upsells) paid tools, especially when you sign up for a hosting account, which can be confusing and increase your costs.

When registering a hosting account with the Hostingator, pay attention to the automatically checked fields and check them out, to make sure that you have avoided additional costs.

In my opinion, Siteground cPanel is a bit clearer, more flexible and has no additional offers. They also have extras, but you know all that before you pay. You only pay for the selected package and that’s it.
Site building tools

The site building tool offered by SiteGround makes it easy to create a WordPress site and works on a drag-and-drop basis. This is the responsibility of the WP Starter add-on, with which you can quickly select a theme, automatically install the offered add-ons.

Also, installing WordPress is quick and easy. With the latest version of WordPress brought by the Gutenberg editor, Siteground also allows you to install the Classic Editor add-on when installing WordPress (by checking this option) so you can use the editor you want without risk.

In addition to WordPress, you can build the site on platforms: Joomla, Drupal, Weebly, e-Shop.

Hostingator offers a simple tool for creating a WordPress site that runs Weebly. As with Siteground, WordPress is installed with a few clicks and there are detailed tutorials for creating a site using these tools.

Both companies offer a money back guarantee, which is great. Instead of a general car installation, both providers, Siteground and Hostingator, offer a tool that facilitates site creation on their first visit. In terms of site migration and the number of domains and subdomains you can create, the winner is Siteground.

Whether you have a company website, online store or blog, security is very important for any website. To protect your site from hacker attacks, the hosting you use must have strong security measures and protection.

The company’s siteground server security is one of its top priorities, as it updates security measures weekly. It uses the HackAlert system to detect malicious attacks before damage occurs to the site, ModSecurity installation on all shared servers, as DDOSet protection.

They take care of the isolation of the account, which helps that the work of other sites does not affect yours. By default, all servers use PHP 7 with the latest security updates.

Siteground is always at the forefront of technology. They have recently developed their own anti-bot AI system, which protects all users from brute-force attacks. The system has achieved amazing results by blocking over 2 million attacks on servers.

This AI system continuously monitors all servers, analyzes the obtained data and automatically blocks bots (IP address or directs the user to the Captcha page. If he solves the Captcha code, the user or IP address goes to the whitelist).

SSL is also an important security factor. Siteground offers free Let`s Encrypt, WildCard SSLi on all packages, which provides and encrypts information transmitted between browsers and users.

In essence, SSL provides information to users of a site (you), such as: email, username and password, credit card information. This is the padlock icon you see in front of my site’s URL.

Siteground makes a daily backup of the site (since 2015 they have developed their own backup system). They also use IDS / IPS systems that block malicious attacks and bots, as well as the SG Site Scanner tool that will scan your site for $ 1.5 a month.

Unlike Siteground, Hostingator does not offer site protection and malware detection by default. You will have to pay around $ 2 to use the SiteLock plugin, which will work daily: spam monitoring, daily malware scanning, etc.

The host also relies on CloudFlare to protect its users from DDOS attacks. Security features also include spam protection, blacklisting of specific IP addresses, and password protection of directories.

The hosting provider provides its users with free backups of the site, which they should create themselves if they want (daily, weekly or monthly). The provider does not back up for users, but recommends the paid Site Backup Pro tool.

The Hostingator offers an SSL certificate for all packages, which will be automatically assigned to all existing and new sites.

The system used by Siteground is much more efficient and does not rely on third parties to protect the sites of its clients. Free daily copies of the site are also very helpful in reducing stress, because you have something to restore the site in case of problems.

Siteground vs Hostingator – Which Hosting Offers a Better Uptime?

Uptime is the time period in which the server is active and displays your site to visitors. It is expressed as a percentage and the ideal rate would be 100%, which would mean that stagnation never exists.

The Uptime test is important because it tells you how many hosting services are available, so it is important to choose a company that offers a high Uptime. The smaller the Uptime, and your site is not constantly available, it can affect business, loss of sales, Google ranking, etc.

Siteground has a Uptime 99.99% because their technology is very reliable with Linux containers, proactive server monitoring, secure account isolation (the first in the industry to create this) and a lot of other things that I don’t understand technically.

Over the past year, their average Uptime has exceeded 99.99%. With Siteground, your servers are secure, without worrying that your site will crash for no reason.

The image below shows the Uptime time in the last 7 days at the time of writing this post, and you can view the Uptime monitor page which is updated non-stop:

And the Hostingator boasts an average Uptime rate that exceeds 99.99%. Practice has shown that they have had interruptions and problems for a long time in the past, which led to their Uptime being 98-99.98%.

Very small differences can mean a lot when it comes to real-time when your site is offline.

Hositngator has made improvements in recent months, uses Quad servers and is seriously committed to maintaining system stability.
Siteground vs. Hostingator – Speed ??and load time

This is a key feature to consider when choosing web hosting. Speed ??is very important, and hosting is a major factor in that equation.

At Siteground, site speed technology is one of the biggest reasons why I chose this company. I want to respect the time of each of my readers, I believe that time is the currency of life and it is important to me that my site loads quickly.

Siteground uses state-of-the-art NGINKS servers, SSDs (which process data faster than HDDs), PHP7, CloudFlare and HTTP / 2 servers. The average load time on sites hosted by Siteground is 1.3 seconds and is well ahead of other companies in the industry.

They also have the SG Optimizer plugin, their own powerful solution for improving the performance of WordPress sites through caching, optimizing images that increase the speed of the site between 20% and 50% depending on the type of site you run. It is available to all users (supplied with each package) and offers three caching options to choose from.

Siteground has already released a new version of PHP 7.3. Latest PHP 7.2. is faster and requires fewer resources from the server to make the site available to the same number of visitors. On Siteground, you can change and select the PHP version with one click.

Here’s a test of the speed of sites hosted on Siteground:

A great way to determine the quality of a hosting company’s server is the TTFB (Time to First Bite) metric, which refers to how fast a host’s server sends the first byte of data when someone visits your site.

When testing a site hosted on Siteground, the TTFB was 0.308 seconds.

TTFB is also affected by the physical distance between the server and the site. Siteground’s servers are located in Chicago, London, Amsterdam, Milan and Singapore. If you are hosting a site on Siteground, you can change the location of the server with one click.

One way to speed up the site is to choose the server location that is closest to your audience. It is also recommended that you set up a CDN that will store your site’s files in multiple locations and deliver site content from the nearest location relative to site visitors.

The hosting company has recently started using SSDs. In addition, they use, like Siteground, Apache technology for dynamic files + NGINKS technology for static files. Bluehost has not yet enabled PHP 7.2 for its users and is still running PHP version 7.0.

The site hosted on Hostingator had a TTFB of 0.401 seconds during the test. Hostingator is technologically a little behind SiteGround, as it is much slower in updating new features.

Based on realistic tests, Siteground offers faster site load times than Bluehost. Bluehost offers a decent load time, but it’s not as good as Siteground.
Siteground vs. Hostingator – Customer Support

The hosting company you choose should be customer oriented and focused and always be at your service when a problem arises.

Inevitably, there is an inevitable problem with hosting. What is important is to resolve any situation as quickly as possible with the help of customer support.

Siteground support is available non-stop, all inquiries and requests are resolved immediately. Siteground is known for its legendary support. I would like you to read other reviews on the Internet, don’t take my word for it :).

In addition to being friendly, Siteground support has extensive knowledge in the field of hosting and WordPress and provides quality assistance, and this includes additional services of certain settings, error correction, site migration, etc.

Here you will get support in 3 ways: via chat (live chat), call and ticket (support card). For a call and chat the answer is immediate, for a ticket a maximum of 5 minutes.

At Siteground you can rely on a large knowledge base in the form of numerous tutorials, webinars.

Hostingator, does not have the same reputation as Siteground when it comes to support. They offer three types of support, ticket, call and live chat. Here you will wait for ticket support for about 10 minutes, and for the other two the response is immediate.

The host has a large knowledge base with tutorials, articles. You can also contact their active forum for questions that interest you. Their expert team can advise you in the field of account management, sales, technical support, on the topic of traffic, performance, security and site speed.
